Progress Update: PERHOPE Project Improves Water Supply Reconstruction in Hormozgan Province

UN-Habitat, with financial support from the Government of Japan, continues to make significant strides in the Emergency Support to Post-Earthquake Reconstruction in Hormozgan Province (PERHOPE) project. The first outcome—restoring access to potable water through disaster-resilient infrastructure—is now in its final phase, marking a critical milestone in post-earthquake recovery efforts.

This initiative focuses on the reconstruction of water supply systems, including water reservoirs and distribution networks, to provide reliable access to clean drinking water for approximately 1,500 residents in the affected communities. By reinforcing climate-resilient infrastructure, UN-Habitat is ensuring long-term sustainability and disaster preparedness.

On 1 and 2 July 2022, twin earthquakes with magnitudes of 6.0 and 5.7 struck the Lengeh area, specifically the Dezhgan rural complex in Hormozgan Province, inflicting extensive damage on human settlements and vital infrastructure, including water supply systems. Compounded by drought, floods, and the ongoing challenges of climate change, the region requires urgent and sustained recovery interventions.

Through PERHOPE, implemented in collaboration with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, UN-Habitat remains committed to strengthening resilience and supporting local communities in Building Back Better, more sustainable settlements.
